web | yahoo mindset
May 30, 2005
Yahoo Mindset is a new way to search by using an ingenious slider tool to filter results by type as well as relevance. The two extremes on the slider are “shopping” and “research”.
As you navigate towards the research side of the slider, the search results are filtered down to research-specific websites with relevance of the search terms. And, naturally as you move towards the shopping end of the spectrum results are filtered to shopping sites that correlate with the search terms. Seems to be very useful.
The only question I have is: “how long will it take google to replicate?”

web | blogger spelling suggestions
May 26, 2005
I just posted about Google’s new personal portal site and ran a spell check. I use Blogger as a posting mechanism (which is owned by google) and it thought that “google” was misspelled and they suggested “googol” and “goggol” as spelling replacements. Maybe they should update their spell checking application?

After using this service from google for the past couple days I can say I am the least bit impressed. For once they followed in the wake of other’s innovation (I belive Yahoo has had services like this for years). Basically this portal allows you to customize your own page using various selectable Google services.
I am not sure why Google has chosen to implement such a service so far behind their competition. It’s handy for those of us who use Google for everything, by creating a one-stop shop for Google services. But, it’s not the innovative technology we are used to from google labs. The interface is simple, by Google’s standards. But it’s nothing that Yahoo did not have years ago. Hopefully they are doing this as a test for a ramp up of a new style portal. If not, I’ll be surprised if this is not Google’s first flop.
While I am on the topic of search engines copying each other… I used Yahoo the other day for the first time in years and noticed their search results do not appear as they used to, in fact… it looks exactly like Google’s. And, Microsoft has just jumped on the Map and satellite imagery bandwagon with services that will be released over the next year. Site.
Through articles I read MS will differentiate their product by offering 45 degree angled shot allowing you to look at the front of your house instead of the normal overhead shot. We’ll see in the coming months as it is supposed to be full-featured by the end of the year.
tech | morse code faster than sms
May 26, 2005
Interesting contest on Jay Leno where two people raced to send a message; one via sms and one via morse code. Or, a contest between very old and quite new messaging technology.
The two men using morse code have been doing it for over 30 years as ham radio operators and their competition was two young adults (one of which holds the world record for sending an sms message — 57 sec to send 160 characters)
Guess who wins…
