February 17, 2006
after a bit of downtime, permissions issues, and random migration issues the new server is in production with all sites running nicely.
that wasn’t too bad. i’m sure something is still broken.
configuring RAID 1 on Dell Poweredge
February 16, 2006
As you know by my last few posts I have gotten a new server. One of the tasks required is setting up RAID 1. In case you are unaware RAID 1 is using two hard drives. One hard drive is the main drive while the other is an exact replica. Obviously this is a great way to back up things, although I’m losing out on a hard drive it’s a simple 80gb backup. And a lot cheaper than tapes. Less time-consuming than other methods.
So, I thought it would be a task setting these drives up on Windows 2003. I figured they’d make it as ridiculous to use as setting up DNS on Windows 2003. I was wrong. Setting up two 80gb SATA drives to do this was quite easy.
1. Start -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management
2. Click on Storage -> Disk Manaagement
3. Convert both drives to ‘Dynamic’ rather than basic. Do this by right-clicking the drive in the lower panel and ‘Convert to Dynamic’. And, select both drives on the following dialog
4. Restart two times. (It will prompt you)
5. In the upper panel, right-click on the drive you want to be mirrored (in my case (C:)) and select ‘Add Mirror’.
6. Select Drive 1.
7. Wait for it to synchronize the two drives.
8. You have a RAID 1 redundant backup.
have fun. questions, email me
how long will this last

reconfiguring the setup again. I am also a serial system admin.
the question is…how long will it stay like this. check out more with notes at flickr.

Upgrade
February 10, 2006
Finally, I’ve upgraded my production server.
Old Spec:
Brand: Home-Built
Processor: 796MHz VIA Samuel 2
Memory: 256MB
Hard Drive: 40gb EIDE
Optical: 16X DVD Rom
Network: 10/100mbps
OS: Windows Server 2003 Enterprise
Granted, I did build this from spare parts three years ago. I put a total of $80 into it.
New Spec:
Brand: Dell PowerEdge
Processor: 2.8GHz Pentium D (Dual-Core)
Memory: 1gb DDR2
Hard Drive: RAID 1 – 2 x 80gb SATA 7.2K RPM
Optical: 48x CD Rom
Network: 10/100/1000mbps
OS: WIndows 2003 Standard
I’d say that’s a healthy upgrade
cant wait

yes, we got them.

windows and rebooting
February 8, 2006
why does every single Microsoft branded application absolutely HAS to require a reboot.
I recently installed IE7 Beta2 and it required a reboot. Today I had to reinstall MS Active Sync (3.8) for my smartphone and it required a reboot.
While I’m on it, how hard is it to make a streamlined sync from my phone to a calendar? ActiveSync has never once worked without requiring user guidance. Also, good luck getting ActiveSync to work with bluetooth. I’ve given up on it.
VMware Server Free
February 6, 2006
VMware Server is now free. VMWare is a very handy tool to create virtual servers.
I have used this for several things:
1) Ability to test my desktop applications on multiple OS’s
2) Ability to run two servers at once (splitting Database and Application Server while sharing hardware)
From VMWare:
With VMware Server you can:
* Streamline software development and testing by allowing developers to create multiple environments with different operating systems on the same server.
* Evaluate software in ready-to-run virtual machines without installation and configuration.
* Re-host legacy operating systems such as Windows NT Server 4.0 and Windows 2000 Server in a virtual machine running on new hardware and operating system.
* Simplify server provisioning by building a virtual machine once and deploying it multiple times.
* Leverage pre-built, ready-to-run virtual appliances that include virtual hardware, operating system and application environments. Virtual appliances for Web, email, proxy and other infratructure services are available for download from the VMTN Virtual Machine Center.
